NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina University is proud to announce the hiring of Kevin Gilmartin as an assistant football coach. Gilmartin joins the Seahawks' football staff with 16 years of prior experience at the collegiate level and will assume the duties of offensive coordinator.
"In the short time that Coach Gilmartin has been in Newport, he has already made a strong impact," says head coach Robert Chesney. "Kevin is passionate, hard working, detail oriented and has a great football IQ. Those are all qualities that have enabled him to win everywhere he has been. That is something we as a staff felt very strongly about when looking to hire this position."
Gilmartin spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach at Mount Ida College, handling the responsibilities of offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, quarterbacks coach, running backs coach, and admissions liaison. He helped lead the team to three consecutive postseason appearances, advancing to the ECFC title game in 2009, as well as the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl in both 2010 and 2011. During his time at Mount Ida, he helped the Mustangs set program records for both points and total yards in a season, and was selected to coach in the 2010 All-American Bowl.
Prior to his time at Mount Ida, Gilmartin gained further collegiate coaching experience as an assistant with Nichols College, Hamilton College, and Hofstra University. Coach Gilmartin also spent three seasons at Nipmuc High School where he became the school's all-time winningest head coach.
"Our Offensive staff has built a great base over the past two years for us to continue to build upon," states Coach Chesney. "I am excited to see what Kevin, Todd and the rest of our offensive staff can do with the group of guys we have returning."
