Football announces 2012 team captains
NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University football program has announced graduate students Patrick Keenan (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Matt Petersen (Bristol, Conn.), as well as seniors Anthony Hannon (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Daniel Kehew (Portsmouth, R.I.), and William Regan (Amesbury, Mass.) as team captains for the 2012 season.
"All five of these young men have made significant contributions to our team over the past few years and their presence is felt both on and off the field," says head coach Robert Chesney. "They are well rounded individuals who compete in everything that they do, and winning is very important to them. That type of mentality is infectious and necessary if we want to be serious about the future of our program."
Each of these players helped lead the Seahawks to one of their most successful seasons last year. Salve Regina finished the 2011 campaign with an 8-3 record, appearing in its first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) bowl since 1999, defeating Worcester State 26-6 in the ECAC North-West Bowl.
Receiving the title of team captain demonstrates that these players have earned the respect of their fellow teammates. As Coach Chesney says, "The selection process is done entirely by our players, so these individuals are a direct reflection of the make-up and mentality of our current team."
After such a successful season last year, the Seahawks are looking to their captains to help them achieve even more in 2012. "Our coaching staff has been very impressed with how each of these men led our team throughout the off-season," says Coach Chesney. "We are excited to see them continue this role through the summer and into the fall."
