MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team fell in overtime to Becker College by a score of 3-2 during ECAC Northeast action Sunday morning.
The Hawks got the scoring started 12:22 into regulation when James Shea (Broad Channel, N.Y.) ripped a shot from the left circle, giving Becker the 1-0 advantage.
The Seahawks responded 10:05 into the second period when William Gomolinski (Western Springs, Ill.) scored a power play goal, tying the game at 1-1. Becker regained the lead 2:40 later when Andrew Bates (Marblehead, Mass.) rebounded a Jeremy Narducci (Apex, N.C.) shot, slipping it through the five hole on Salve goalie Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ont.).
The Seahawks tied the game 6:10 into the third period when Anthony Birbilis (Katonah, N.Y.) fed Chad Hollenshade (Lutherville, Md.) on a wrap around pass, beating Becker goalie Shaun Millerick (Hampton, N.H.) blocker side. The two teams played to a 2-2 stalemate for the remainder of regulation.
With 00:22 remaining in overtime Andrew Bates redirected a David Moore (Winfield, Ill.) shot into the top right corner of the net, giving the Ice Hawks the thrilling 3-2 victory.
Shaun Millerick made turned away 33 shots as the Hawks improved their record to 7-9-1 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Ice Hawks return to action on Thursday, January 26th, when they travel to Curry College at 7:35pm.
Mike McDonald made 36 stops in a losing effort. The loss drops Salve Regina to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the ECAC Northeast. The Seahawks get back to work on Wednesday, January 25th when they travel to Nichols College for a tilt with the Bison at 8:10pm.
