NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University junior Nicodemo Camarda (Burlington, N.J.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) have been named The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Men's and Women's Soccer Players of the Week, respectively.
Camarda recorded his first-career two-goal game in a 4-3 overtime loss to MIT on Wednesday. His first goal came 5:14 into the second half off a feed from junior Sean McAllister (North Arlington, N.J.), and his second goal at 80:12 of the match gave the Seahawks a 3-2 lead. Senior tri-captain Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.) collected the assist on Camarda's second tally of the afternoon and third of his career.
"In what has been a slow start to the 2010 season for us, Nicodemo's play has been a bright point," said head coach Craig O'Rourke II. "In our first match this year, I thought he was easily the best player in our uniform. Both of his goals were class finishes that demonstrated his full skill set and ability to read the play and move off-the-ball."
Birrell, meanwhile, scored four of the Seahawks five goals in a 1-1 week. She potted the Seahawks second goal in a 2-0 season-opening win over WPI on Wednesday, then picked up a hat trick in a 4-3 overtime loss to Bridgewater State University on Saturday. She now has 19 career goals in 21 career games.
"Katie has come out on fire," said head coach Kerri Scroope. "She is one of the best in the conference and I am very excited to see her to continue to grow as a player. She is not only making herself better every day, but her teammates as well, and that is huge to get that kind of leadership from an underclassman."
The women's soccer team returns to action Tuesday afternoon when they host Mass.-Dartmouth at 4 p.m., while the men (0-2) travel to Coast Guard for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday night.
