Galla gives Seahawks third straight win

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Senior forward Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn./Woodland HS) scored her third goal of the game with 43 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give visiting Salve Regina a 5-4 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday evening.

Galla broke in and scored against UMD junior goalkeeper Stephanie Borges (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) to end the match and spoil a late Corsair comeback.

UMass Dartmouth had tied the game, 4-4, scoring twice in the waning moments. Freshman midfielder Danielle Gauvin's (Fall River, Mass./Durfee HS) first goal of the season with three minutes remaining cut Salve's lead to 4-3, and junior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, Mass./Agawam HS) scored with 1:41 to play to tie the score.

Goals by freshman midfielder Britt Blanchette (Hope, R.I./La Salle Academy) and Galla scored in the first half for the Seahawks, and sophomore forwards Tori Pierce (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton HS) and Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass./Tri-County HS) replied in kind for UMD, as the first half ended in a 2-2 tie. Blanchette scored in the 47th minute and Galla scored in the 76th minute to stake SRU to a 4-2 lead, setting the stage for UMD's late comeback.

The Seahawks outshot the Corsairs, 16-14. Borges made seven saves for UMD, while sophomore Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield HS) made 11 for SRU.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-1 with the loss, while Salve Regina improved to 3-1 with the win. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Nichols Thursday. The Seahawks will host Wentworth Saturday.
