Birrell's hat trick lifts Seahawks to 3-0 win over Curry
MILTON, Mass. - Salve Regina University defeated Curry College, 3-0, in women's soccer action on Saturday in Milton. With the win the Seahawks improve to 11-5-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Colonels fell to 3-14 overall and 1-8 in the CCC.
Salve Regina wasted no time scoring their first goal on the day. The Seahawks' leading goal scorer junior Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.), earned her first of two goals in the first period just 1:53 into the first half. Junior Ashley Jamieson (Warwick, R.I.) sent a nice through pass to Birrell for the assist.
Curry had their opportunities as they outshot Salve Regina 11-10. Out of the Colonels 11 shots, seven landed on net. Sophomore Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.) was solid between the pipes for the Seahawks to keep Curry scoreless.
Both teams had a goal taken back due to offside calls only five minutes apart from each other. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) made six saves in frame and kept Salve Regina with just a 1-0 lead until the 26:12 mark. Birrell scored her second goal, unassisted, when she dribbled by two Curry defenders and shot the ball in the upper right hand corner of the net. Hardy looked to have misread the shot as it soared over her head.
The Seahawks finished the half with 10 shots, eight on net, one corner and two fouls. The Colonels finished with 11 shots, seven on net and three fouls.
Salve outshot Curry by just two in the second half, but managed to get one more goal for the 3-0 shutout. Birrell scored the team's third goal for her hat trick, 30:29 into the half. Senior Jackie Lee (North Reading, Mass.) was credited with the assist when she crossed the ball from the corner of the field that connected with Birrell for the one-touch score.
Sophomore Jacqueline McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) came in for Lane in net for the Seahawks at the 17:23 mark and made two saves. The Colonels 14 shots on goal weren't enough, as they couldn't put one away for a goal.
Salve Regina ended with 21 total shots, 15 on net, seven corners and four fouls. Curry ended with 20 shots, 14 on net, three corners and six fouls.
Lane made 12 saves in net in 67:37 minutes of play. McPherson made two saves in 22:23 minutes of play. Hardy made 12 saves in the loss.
The Colonels will host Emmanuel College on Tuesday, October 25 for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Salve Regina will host Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, October 26 for a 3:30 p.m. game start.
