Seahawks set to swing into 2011 fall schedule
NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University women's tennis team enters the 2011-12 campaign coming off its first 10-win season in three years. The Seahawks finished with an overall mark of 10-6 last season, posting an impressive 9-2 record in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), and will look to build upon that success this year.
The Seahawks will host their annual alumni match on Sunday, August 28 before hitting the road to face Endicott College on Sunday, September 3 (11 a.m.) in a match that will mark both their season and conference opener. The team will then welcome Rhode Island College on Thursday, September 8 for its home opener starting at 3:30 p.m.
The Seahawks will also take part in a pair of tournaments this fall. They will host the 28th annual Grass Court Doubles tournament on Saturday, September 17 (1 p.m.) held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and will also play in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on October 14-16.
Another date to mark on your calendar is Senior Day, which will be celebrated on Saturday, October 1 (1 p.m.) when the Seahawks host conference-foe Western New England University.
The Seahawks will be led by a pair of all-conference returners this year in senior Nichol Stevens (Chester, Conn.), and sophomore Ana Gwozdz (Tauton, Mass.) as they look to avenge a loss in the CCC semifinals last season. The team also needs just seven victories to help head coach Ed Habershaw reach the milestone of 200 career wins with the women's program.
