NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Tuning up for its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semifinal date with top-seeded Nichols College on Wednesday, the Salve Regina University women's tennis team competed at the New England Women's Invitational Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Smith College on October 14-15.

Salve Regina played all but its Round of 16 consolation matches inside the Ainsworth Gymnasium on the campus of Smith College. On Friday, Salve Regina's A Draw pair of Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) and Ana Gwozdz (Taunton, Mass.) drew a pair from MIT. The Engineers took all three matches in the Federation Cup-style event. Matches were all eight-game pro-sets when played indoors.

The Seahawks were swept in all first-round matches on Friday before their B Draw pair of Shannon O'Brien (Gorham, Maine) and Karlee Walther (Natick, Mass.) took a 2-1 decision over MIT in a consolation match on Saturday outside. O'Brien garnered a straight-set win in singles before she and Walther won the final three games in their eight-game pro-set doubles match for an 8-6 victory. The Seahawks were in the middle of warm-ups outside with a pair from the host institution when a downpour forced action indoors again.

Walther took an 8-3 singles win but Smith College had already won two decision in the match-up to advance to the consolation semifinals.

Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.) and Erica Shay (Concord, Mass.) also competed in the B Draw for Salve Regina.

"This is always a great event for us to participate in since we see a lot of players and teams that we don't see on our regular-season dual match schedule, including four-time national champion Williams College," said Seahawk head coach Ed Habershaw. "I love the format that allows our pairs to advance even if there is one loss in a match setting, we have the opportunity to outplay an opponent in three matches. The pairs that win two, or sweep all three, move on."
