Salve Regina tripped at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Seniors Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt.) and Emily Ogilvy (Bedford, N.H.) played a role in two victories to help the regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College women's tennis team finish its regular season with an 8-1 Senior Day triumph over non-conference opponent Salve Regina University on Sunday at the SMC Tennis Courts.

Salve Regina claimed its win at No. 3 singles with sophomore Ana Gwozdz (Taunton, Mass.) besting Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo.) in straight sets.

The Purple Knights, who rank ninth in the latest NCAA East region rankings, finished the regular season 12-7. They will hold down the fourth seed in this week's Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, hosting No. 5 Bentley University for the third consecutive year on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Seahawks fall to 8-8.

Saint Michael's claimed all three doubles matches by an 8-3 count, with Mullowney and Ogilvy siding for the first time in their careers, winning at No. 2 over Gwozdz and Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.). Junior Alex Dalton (South Easton, Mass.) and freshman Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass.) held down the top spot over Seahawk freshmen Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) and Meg Olson (Colchester, Vt. - playing in her hometown), and freshmen Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Michelle Moreau (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) joined in the third position against Salve Regina senior Nichol Stevens (Chester, Conn.) and freshman Erica Shay (Concord, Mass.).

The Purple Knights nabbed five of six singles matches, as junior Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) claimed a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 1, Dalton earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the second slot, and freshman Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Freshman Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) and Ogilvy snagged 8-3 pro-set victories.

Salve Regina ends its regular season on Saturday while hosting Mt. St. Mary (N.Y.) at 1 p.m. on the Leroy Avenue courts. The Seahawks will host their annual Megs Doubles, a free clinic to honor former player Meghan Strathman, on Sunday, April 22.
